Downgrade iPhone/iPod touch from iOS 4.2.1 to 4.1

For iPhone 3G iOS passed under 4.2.1, the tethering function has disappeared. The downgrade to iOS 4.1 allows to find this feature. Also remember to back up data stored on your iPhone before you begin the process of jailbreak!

Requirements:
A computer with the operating system Mac OS X or Windows XP/Vista/7. 
iTunes 10.1  must be installed on your PC. Not for the downgrade but for managing data transfers between iTunes and iOS iOS 4.2.1 (ie, for data synchronization).
Your iPhone has one of the following characteristics:

  • IPhone 3G, 3G, 4 provided the official Apple 4.2.1 firmware, so they are not jailbroken
  • IPhone 3G, 3G, 4 jailbroken on iOS 4.2.1.
  • IPhone 3G, 3G, 4 on iOS 4.x and unlocked using Ultrasn0w.


This tutorial will be effective only to those who saved their signature using Cydia or TinyUmbrella
Do not perform the firmware update 4.2.1 official from Apple via iTunes if your iPhone was purchased abroad for the procedure of downgrade will not allow you to be able to unlock your iPhone because the baseband has changed from IOS 4.1 to 4.2.1 and downgrade the iOS will not be effective.

Step 1: 

Download the latest version of TinyUmbrella 4.21.01 and place the software on your "desktop":

Double-click TinyUmbrella 4.21.01 to start installing the software on your computer with Mac OS X or Windows XP/Vista/7. You may be need administrator access to perform this installation.

 Download iOS 4.1 to perform the downgrade:

Note 1:
- The firmware for the iPhone 3G is called: iPhone1, 2_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw
If you can not find it after downloading, make sure it does not extention. Zip. In which case you should change the extension. Zip. Ipsw
- The firmware for the iPhone 3G is entitled iPhone2, 1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw
If you can not find it after downloading, make sure it does not extention. Zip. In which case you should change the extension. Zip. Ipsw
- The firmware for the iPhone 4 is entitled: iPhone3, 1_4.1_8B117_Restore.ipsw
If you can not find it after downloading, make sure it does not extention. Zip. In which case you should change the extension. Zip. Ipsw

Note 2:
If you can not find the official firmware 4.1 on your computer, you can re-download from the links above and place it directly on your desktop, for example ...


  1. If you already have a custom firmware 4.1, you can of course use it to perform the downgrade.
  2. If you have an iPhone 3G/3GS/4 Non-Model TM, go to Step 3 of this tutorial (step 2 does not apply to you).
  3. If you have an iPhone 3G/3GS/4 MC-Model, go to step 2.


Step 2: 

This step will allow to fool iTunes does not allow him to verify your iPhone on Apple's servers but servers Saurik. To do so, we will modify the Hosts file on your computer time handling.

You must have administrative rights on your computer to perform this step!

If you use a computer running Mac OS X, go to Step 3

If you use a computer running Windows XP/Vista/7, go to step 4 

Step 3: 

Changing the Hosts file in Mac OS X

Launch application "Terminal" Mac OS X that is located in / Applications / Utilities /.

Copy the following command will open the Hosts file in Mac OS X text editor for Mac OS X (TextEdit): sudo / Applications / TextEdit.app / Contents / MacOS / TextEdit / etc / hosts

NB Terminal Mac OS X will ask the administrator password to execute this command. When you enter the administrator password, it will not appear on the screen for security reasons. It is therefore natural that the field for the password will remain white during the seizure. Once your password is entered, press Enter. Terminal will open the Hosts file in TextEdit.

The Hosts file contains a series of IP addresses and server names.

Copy the following line in the Hosts file, following IP addresses and name servers that already exist and then save the file: 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

warning: : Make sure you enter correctly 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com line of the existing ones!

Step 4: 

Changing the Hosts file in Windows XP/Vista/7

Browse through the file explorer in the directory C: \ Windows \ System32 \ drivers \ etc \ and open the file called hosts in notepad of Windows.

The Hosts file contains a series of IP addresses and server names.

Copy the following line in the Hosts file, following IP addresses and name servers that already exist and then save the file: 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

Warning : Make sure you enter correctly 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com line of the existing ones!

Go to Step 2.3.

When your downgrade is completed (at the end of the tutorial), think again step 3 to clear, this time, the line 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com your Hosts file!

Step 5:

Place your iPhone in DFU mode Recovery.

Pressing the Power of the iPhone for 3 seconds:

Keeping pressing Power, you will need to maintain the iPhone's Home button for another 10 seconds:

Then you must release the power button but keep pressing the Home button for another 30 seconds:

Launch iTunes 10. It should recognize an iPhone in recovery mode.


Press OK. Hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard while clicking the icon on your iPhone in the sidebar of iTunes. Then select the "Restore" button. Locate the firmware 4.1 and press OK.

then install iTunes 4.1 on iOS iPhone 3G and 3G. This may take several minutes. IN NO EVENT DOES NOT YOUR IPHONE disconnects the switched. Be patient. Your iPhone will restart itself once the installation is complete. 

    
Step 6:

Installing 4.1 on your iPhone iOS 3G/3GS equipped iOS 4.2.1 will cause the appearance of an error between 1004 and 1015 indicating that your iPhone can be restored using this firmware and an unknown error was encountered. Your iPhone will restart and will hang on the Recovery mode with the iTunes logo displayed on the screen of your iPhone.

Do not panic!

 Run the application called TinyUmbrella 21.04.01. On the first screen that appears, simply press OK.

Press "Exit Recovery." IPhone Recovery Mode.  

Congratulations on your iPhone has been downgraded. For iPhone 3G, you can again use the internet tethering mode which has disappeared from iPhone 3G iOS 4.2.

For iPhone 3G and 3G-TM Model, go to Step 5, for others, the tutorial is finished.

Step 7:

 Repeat step 3 to delete the line 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com the Hosts file and save the file.
